EFO….providing the margin of excellence

Recognizing the connection between a background in the arts and a student's academic performance, the Educational Foundation of Orinda (EFO) made funding for music and the arts a cornerstone of its existence. Spurred to action after drastic cuts to arts' education in the late 1970s, EFO has helped to preserve music instruction and programs in Orinda's schools for over 20 years. It is tragic that school districts often have to "choose" between funding for math and funding for music when, in fact, they are both essential pieces of a total school program geared to a student’s total growth and development.

EFO has historically supported weekly music instruction in classrooms K-5 and music electives at Orinda Intermediate School. Aligning itself firmly on the side of music education in the schools, EFO has now assumed 100% of the funding for music programs for the Orinda Union School District. Further, EFO has provided a special grant to bring the California Symphony in the Schools program to all of Orinda's elementaryschools the past 2 years. Students have been treated to insights from symphony professionals while experiencing hands-on lessons with brass, string and percussion instruments.

When EFO expanded its support to Miramonte in 1995, additional music electives were made available to highschool students. According to Dennis Regalado, principal, "Electives in chorus, dance and jazz band were offered as a direct result of EFO support. Music programs have expanded and student interest has grown as funding for these electives has become a priority."

As testament to the value EFO places on music in our schools, the Foundation has sponsored the annual Orinda Schools' Music Festival each spring since 1997. And, as testament to the growth of music offerings at our schools, performing groups have expanded beyond the parameters of a single evening performance. Thisyear only selected groups from the elementary schools, OIS and Miramonte will showcase their musical talents in a shortened program which will be introduced as "EFO's Celebration of the Arts." This inclusive title foretells a goal of highlighting all of our students' talents in the arts in future years.

Student interest in music and the arts is high and EFO is proud to play a leading role in arts’ education in Orinda's schools.
